The Everest region is one of the world’s most popular and spectacular trekking destinations and is famous for its spectacular mountain peaks, including Mt. Everest (8,848m) and several other giants.
The Gokyo lakes region at the head of the Dudh Kosi valley provides a great alternative to the popular Everest Base Camp trek. It is a more peaceful trek through the Sherpa heartland that affords more time for acclimatization with opportunities to savour the mountain panoramas from beautiful alpine campsites. The rich Sherpa culture and their friendly nature are an added extra bonus on this awe-inspiring trip.
The highlights of the trek are our ascent of Gokyo Ri. From the summit we gain superb views of Everest as well as the 8000m peaks of Lhotse, Makalu and Cho-Oyu and the crossing of Cho La pass glacier (5,380m). Gokyo lake – located at an altitude of 4,700m (15,400ft) – is the main lake in this area. It lies in Nepal’s Sagarmatha National Park, a natural heritage site. The park includes Mt. Everest (8,848m) and other high peaks such as Lhotse, Lhotse Shar, Cho-Oyu, Ama Dablam, Pumori, Kangtega, Gyachung Kang, Thamserku, Kwangde, to name but a few, and is rugged with deep gorges, glaciers with its ice and rock faces.
We at Himalayan Treks allow full customisation for our customers, which is why we also have add-ons and trip extensions which can be perused by interested trekkers. Some popular trip extension availed by our clients include a day or more exploring the historic sites of Kathmandu, Bhaktapur or why not pay a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage Chitwan National Park. If you look for a different experience, though, we can recommendthe Annapurna Circuit trek, the Gokyo Valley trek (Everest region), the Langtang Valley trek or the Tamang Heritage Trail (Langtang area).
On arrival at Kathmandu airport, a member of the Himalayan Treks team will be waiting for you and take you to your hotel.
The Everest Gokyo trek starts with a scenic flight to Lukla that includes awe-inspiring views of the Himalaya range. We begin our trek hiking up the Dudh Koshi valley towards Phakding.
ALTITUDE: From 1,400m to 2,610m
After Phakding we will be following and crossing the river several times over high suspension bridges. After Monjo we will enter the Sagarmatha National Park. We will see a number of stupas, mani walls and prayer wheels along the way.
Once we have entered the Sagarmatha National Park, the trail becomes a bit steep all the way to Namche Bazar. Namche is the capital of the Khumbu region, an important trading point of the past. This is the last place to find anything that you may have forgotten, to find a bank and pharmacies or just to treat yourself to a cup of Illy coffee or brownies. We may even catch our first glimpse of Mt Everest from here if on a clear day.
ALTITUDE: From 2,610m to 3,440m
Today we will stay in Namche for acclimatisation purposes. We will trek up to the Everest View Hotel (at 3,880m) in the morning to help acclimatise and also to enjoy the fabulous mountains views of Ama Dablam and the first (or second) glimpse of Mt Everest. We will come back to Namche for lunch.
